Making Your Appointment

The practice is open Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5.30pm. Please be aware when choosing an appointment time that applicants should attend 30 minutes prior to the booked appointment time to complete necessary paperwork. For instance, an appointment at 3:00pm would mean arrival at 2.30pm. Please note, if you have an early appointment, you will be allowed access into the building only after 9:00am.

For visa medical appointments, please use our online BOOKING FORM and questionnaire. Please make sure you read all the information on this page before making your booking. You will need your passport number and any medical ID numbers that might have been issued to you by immigration.

Group / Family Bookings

If you are booking for more than one person, please select a date with enough available appointments for each of you. You need to book one separate appointment for each person attending. Please try to book consecutive appointments (one-after-the-other) as far as possible. If you are unable to book these, please email our team for assistance at info@knightsbridge-doctors.com.

cancellation

The full fee of your selected appointment will be taken at the time of booking. Please note all appointment prices include a non-refundable fee of £80.00. Additionally, if the cancellation is within 48 hours of the booked appointment, 50 percent of the appointment fee but a minimum of £80.00 will be charged. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the paperwork / administration details are up to date and be certain that an immigration medical examination is required by the Australian authorities. Please ensure the Australian authorities are requesting an Immigration Medical Examination. Applicants who attend and do not require an Immigration Medical Examination or cancel at short notice will be subject to the Practice cancellation policy.

A valid HAP ID is required

All medicals are now processed electronically on eMedical. All applicants must have a HAP ID number at the time of booking in order to locate the case on eMedical.

Further information on the health requirements and how to download your eMedical Referral Letter may be found on the Australian Immigration website: www.immi.gov.au.

For Female Applicants

A full physical examination is required so if you wish to request a female Doctor, please book your appointment with either Dr O’Connell, Dr Bathula or Dr Littlewood. The examination does not involve a breast or pelvic examination.

For Applicants Under 18 Years

Applicants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If there is an issue with a parent or legal guardian attending, please contact the clinic directly as early as possible before an appointment. This will allow clarification of measures that may be required for the immigration medical examination to proceed.

The medical

What To Expect During The Examination

All applicants over the age of 15 years will have a full medical examination including a blood test to assess kidney function (eGFR and serum creatinine test).

If indicated, an IGRA (interferon gamma release assay) blood test is carried out over the age of 2 years. This test assesses whether a person has been exposed to the tuberculosis bacteria.

The medical itself involves a physical examination, where the applicant will undress to underwear whilst wearing a gown.

If you would like a chaperone present during the medical examination, please do not hesitate to request one.

11+

Most applicants aged 11 years and above will need a chest X-ray.

15+

Permanent Visa applicants aged 15 years and above will require blood tests for HIV status.

Healthcare

All doctors, dentists or nurses working in healthcare will require blood tests for HIV, Hepatitis B and C.

All provisional and permanent visa applicants aged 15 years or older born in high hepatitis B risk countries require a hepatitis B surface antigen blood test.

Usually, the results take 3-4 working days to process and are then submitted to Immigration via their online eMedical system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reschedule my appointment?

If you need to reschedule your appointment, please email the practice on info@knightsbridge-doctors.com with the new date and preferred time you need your appointment moved too. If you are rescheduling more than one person/appointment, please list all those who need to be moved in your email.

Do I need to fast before my blood test?

There is no need to fast, you can eat and drink as normal prior to your appointment.

I am booking for a family; how do I do this?

Every person who needs a medical must have their own appointment. You must book each person individually. Please book consecutive appointments where possible.

How long will my appointment take?

For an individual adult, please allow 1.5 hours from arrival for your appointment. However, we recommend allowing 2 hours in case of unforeseen delays. The approximate duration for a family of 4 is 2-3 hours.

What medical reports do I need to bring to my appointment?

If you have any significant medical conditions, please bring relevant Hospital Clinic letters (or occasionally a GP report) to your appointment. If you are otherwise healthy, you do not need to bring a medical report with you. If you are unsure, please wait and discuss this with the doctor during your appointment who will advise you further.

I have paid online; will I have to pay again on the day of my appointment?

If you have booked correctly for your medical appointment, you will have nothing further to pay on the day of your appointment. If, however, you have booked incorrectly, the difference in payment for the required tests will be taken from you via card during your appointment. Moreover, if any further required tests become apparent during your appointment, these will be charged additionally.

What does the medical examination involve?

The medical examination is an assessment with the doctor which will involve a series of questions regarding past medical history. For children, their development including school progress will be addressed.
The physical examination will consist of a general observation and, specifically, examination of each area of the body in turn. Thus, the lymph glands will be checked in the neck and under the arms. The ears and throat will be looked into. The heart and lungs will be examined in the chest and the abdomen will also be examined. Each applicant will also be weighed, their height measured, and, if appropriate, their visual acuity formally checked. There will be no breast or genital examination.
Kidney Function blood testing: If taking creatine supplements (usually bodybuilders/some gym users), this may result in a falsely raised serum creatinine result and therefore a falsely low eGFR. Thus generally one should avoid creatinine supplements for a day or two prior to blood tests for serum creatinine and eGFR.

Will I need to return to Knightsbridge Doctors after the initial appointment?

Uncommonly to complete the immigration medical examination, an applicant might need to return to the Practice for a follow up closer chest x-ray view or a further blood sample.

I do not have a HAP ID, can I book my appointment?

You cannot be seen without a valid HAP ID. Please wait until you receive this to book your appointment. If an appointment is cancelled because a valid hap id to complete an immigration medical examination is not available, a cancellation charge will apply. This specifically applies where an applicant decides to book an appointment and it is confirmed in due course that the appointment is not required by Australia immigration.

I am pregnant, do I need to have a chest x-ray?

The Australian panel physician instructions state: “Applicants presenting a passport from lower TB risk countries are not required to complete a Chest X-Ray if pregnant. Evidence of pregnancy must be provided, for example, a certificate from the applicant’s own doctor.
Please see the following link for the list of low prevalence TB countries: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/health/what-health-examinations-you-need
Applicants presenting a passport from higher TB risk countries who are more than 14 weeks pregnant must be advised that they have the option of either:
a. deferring the Chest X-Ray until after giving birth meaning their Immigration Medical Examination and visa application cannot be finalised until the Chest X-Ray examination is completed, or
b. Proceeding with the Chest X-Ray, with appropriate advice and precautions being taken. The Panel Physician will discuss these options at the appointment.

Do I need to provide a urine sample for my Australian medical?

There is no urine test for Australia, you do not need to provide a urine sample.

Does my child need an IGRA blood test, what is this?

IGRA blood test (or a tuberculin skin test) checks for previous exposure to tubercolosis infection. Children aged 2 to under 11 years, who are from a higher risk TB country, and are applying for a permanent or provisional visa require either an IGRA blood test (or a tuberculin skin test. The tuberculin skin test requires a second visit to the Practice between 2 and 3 days after the initial visit).
Please see the following link for the list of low prevalence TB countries. If the country of the child’s passport is NOT on the below list, it indicates the child is from a higher risk country for Tuberculosis: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/health/what-health-examinations-you-need

Does my child / myself need a Hepatitis B surface antigen blood test, what is this?

All provisional and permanent visa applicants aged 15 years or older born in high hepatitis B risk countries require a hepatitis B surface antigen blood test.
For the list of LOW Hepatitis B risk countries, see ‘Countries with low risk of Hepatitis B’ at: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/health/what-health-examinations-you-need. If the applicant’s country of birth is NOT on this list he/she would be considered to be from a high hepatitis B risk country.
Please be aware that for between 4 to 8 weeks after having a hepatitis B vaccination, the outcome of the screening hepatitis B blood test can be affected.

What happens if I don't need an immigration medical examination but my child does?

All applicants agree to complete health aspects of the visa application process as part of their visa application in eMedical. A parent or guardian (necessary evidence will be required to verify the relationship) must sign on behalf of any applicant aged under 18 years or who is deemed an 'incapable person'. If children are subject to custody arrangements, Panel Members may need to obtain consent from both parents and guardians. For applicants aged under 18 years where a guardian is signing the consent form, the relationship of the guardian to the applicant must be listed on the consent form that is signed. Evidence of the guardianship relationship must be provided and attached to eMedical where it is not a parent.

Will I need a Polio vaccination?

Visa applicants, aged six weeks and over, who have spent a cumulative period of 28 days or more, in one or more high polio risk countries must present evidence of receiving a dose of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) within 12 months of travel to their visa processing officer. The client must upload the polio certificate to their ImmiAccount to ensure it is visible to their visa processing officer.
If this applies to you and you have the required evidence of vaccination, you must upload this evidence to your IMMI account. We do not need to see evidence of vaccination, nor can we upload it on your behalf.
If you require vaccination, this can be done at Knightsbridge Doctors on the day of your medical examination for an additional charge of £80.00. You will then be provided a certificate of vaccination which you must upload to your IMMI account.
Please see Countries considered at risk of polio listed on the website: Threats to public health (homeaffairs.gov.au).
More information on polio vaccination is available from: Polio (poliomyelitis) vaccine | Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (health.gov.au).
